Primeira Liga, what is it?
The Primeira Liga, often widely recognized as Liga PT, is Portugal's highest-level football competition. Every season, 18 clubs compete in the league.
Primeira Liga history
It began as an experimental league in 1934, then became an official competition in 1938, and was known as Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Diviso until 1999, when it was renamed. The Primeira Liga has been contested by more than 70 teams, but only five have won the title including the "Big Three'' teams – Benfica (37 times), Porto (29 times), and Sporting CP (19 times), and two others which are Belenenses (1) and Boavista (1).
Format of Primeira Liga
Like most leagues around the world, the Portuguese Primeira Liga employs a promotion-relegation system. Two teams are transferred up to LigaPro, while two others are advanced to the top flight of Portugal.
The Portuguese top-flight offers its champion a place in the UEFA Champions League Group Stage, whereas the runners-up are eligible to compete in the competition from the second playoff round onward. 3 more teams will compete in the UEFA Europa League, but only one will advance to the Group Stage.
In the preliminary rounds, the other two teams will have to battle for it. The Primeira Liga season begins in August and ends in May of the subsequent year, just like any other top European league.
Primeira Liga Clubs
In the history of the Portuguese Primeira, the 2018/2019 season is the only one that witnessed the promotion and relegation of 3 teams including Chaves, Nacional, and Feirense. Gil Vicente, Famalicao, and Pacos de Ferreira, on the other hand, earned their places in the top-flight.
For the first time in 25 years, Famalicao was promoted to the Primeira Liga, and the top news was Gil Vicente's reinstatement in the Portuguese top-flight following a court order.
Let's see what actually happened in Gil Vicente's case. The thing is Gil Vicente had been relegated in the 2015-16 season, Gil Vicente had been relegated, but after the Primeira Liga engaged in an expansion strategy, they tried to fight their issue and requested to be reinstated. 3 years after that, the court was finally in favor of them, and the Galos returned.
